The TD-2000 Optical Time Domain Reflectometer
operates by firing a pulse of light into one end of a fiber. Then by precisely timing the arrival of reflections, exact distances to cable faults can be displayed on the built-in CRT screen.
The TD-2000 system is made up of a single mainframe and a series of optical modules (however only one available).
Mainframe functions include data collection, display and storage. Each optical module contains one or two lasers and a detector optimized for specific fiber tests.
The MS-DOS operating system used in the TD-2000 is the same one used on many older desktop computers. Interfaces include RS-232, GPIB (IEEE-488) and a parallel printer port.
Interchangeable optical modules
High resolution optical modules are used primarily in testing fiber optic systems where eatures such as connectors and splices are closely spaced. These modules are optimized at pulsewidth for minimum event deadzones without sacrificing dynamic range. All of these modules provide measurement of Fresnel and backscatter events, allowing detection of connectors, mechanical splices, fusion splices and fiber loss per unit distance.
